Dear Members and Friends,

As we reflect on the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany through Pastor Mandy's sermons, Ernie's capacious focus on music of the Reformation and other special programming, I wonder how Martin Luther's revolutionary action might affect my own support of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College (CCDC) especially as we embark on this important new chapter in our own Congregation's history.

Closer to home and to the present, I wonder how I can best demonstrate my confidence and faith in the Pastoral Search Committee's tremendous work and success in bringing Mandy to us.  How do I use my time, talent and treasure to assure Mandy and the Congregation that I will honor our Covenant to give myself freely, and with an open heart, to the ministry of our Church?  As I ask myself these questions, I trust that I am not alone, and that many of you are asking similar questions.

As you ponder such questions, I hope the enclosed brochure will provide a helpful context in understanding how CCDC's finances work to support our ministries and allow us to honor our Covenant. As you will note, over 60 percent of the budget revenue comes directly from pledge income committed by members and friends of the Church. While we are fortunate to have an endowment built from historic gifts, and a facility--that through leases and rentals--generates income sufficient to cover the cost of routine building maintenance, each of us still needs to commit direct time, talent and treasure to ensure that we fulfill all of CCDC's ministries. Much of our ministerial work depends on fully supporting the work of Pastor Mandy and our experienced, talented and dedicated staff team. Our personnel costs account for over two thirds of our operating budget, and as we seek to honor all components of our Covenant, I believe, this is as it should be.

Over the next several weeks, the Elders will provide additional information and outreach that we hope will enhance our 2018 pledge campaign--an effort we aim to complete successfully and joyfully on Sunday, November 19, 2017.  In that spirit, let us be brave and bold as were our ancestors including Martin Luther and Eleazar Wheelock, and as Pastor Mandy will surely need to be as she leads us on in our journey of faith.

Covenantly yours,
Trish Jackson
President of the Elders
